Blastomycosis is a systemic fungal infection that can infect mammals and people. It is more prevalent in the Midwest than in other parts of the country and there are hot spots of incidence within areas of the Midwest including northern Illinois and Wisconsin. The fungus produces spored which can persist in the soil for years. Transmission occurs mostly through inhalation of the spores from the soil. In most cases, transmission does not occur between animals or animals and people.
Several generalized nonspecific symptoms can occur but usually include coughing or trouble breathing, poor appetite, weight loss, skin lesions, lethargy and fever. Several tests can be used to diagnose Blastomycosis. A urine test for Blasto is most commonly used for diagnosis and monitoring response to treatment. Oral medications are used to treat the infection but are used over several months. Most dogs respond to the medications, but in severe cases, the infection can be fatal.
